THE LIGHT OF UNITY ASSOCIATION JOINS MAD POETS SOCIETY AT UPENN
FOR MULTIPLE CHARITY EVENTS 2010
Light of Unity Association (LOU) founded in 2007 by executive director, Tamara G. Oakman, is a charity organization with a mission to help the community here and abroad. Half of the proceeds will go to a different charity attached to every event from April - September. Their April charity is Haiti relief via OIC International. In May proceeds will be donated to the Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County. In June, Little Brother's Friend's of the Elderly, July, Philabundance, August, City Team Ministries and in September, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. In these hard times, it is so important to stand up for something, and this series with 6 events on 1st Thursdays at 6pm from April to September, and 52 outstanding performers from all geographical distances is doing that in a huge way. LOU will award the other half of proceeds to the artists. LOU retains no monies.
Mad Poet's Society (MPS) has been in the business of donating its proceeds to charities for many years. Eileen D'Angelo, director, is not ever paid a penny for hosting MPS events, nor has anyone else connected to MPS, for producing over a thousand arts events since 1987. D'Angelo and Oakman are the same in that they are both committed to community, charity, and bringing artists of all backgrounds together to help initiate change. Their payment is the lives they touch.
There are 52 fine performers in the series from every genre, race, culture including, Yellow Rage (featured, Def Poetry Jam), Jafar Barron (discography, Erykah Badu & Jill Scott), Christine Weiser (co-publisher, Philadelphia Stories), Jeffrey Ethan Lee (co-director, Many Mountains Moving), Lamont B. Steptoe (author of over 8 books, gay rights activist), Deborah Derrickson Kossman (NY Times published author and psychologist) and many, many more.
The Light of Unity Association is an all volunteer run organization that bridges cultural, racial, and regional backgrounds to highlight arts ranging from poets and essayists to musicians and even theatrical performances. It is their mission to promote social and cultural unity in the city of Philadelphia and beyond. They are joining forces with poets, musicians, writers, organizers, performers, artists of all kinds in celebration of love, compassion, hope, joy, and charity. There is a cafe in the bookstore that provides food and drink. There is metered parking around the venue and nearby parking lots. Please join them in their celebration of life, unity, love.
